What changes do I need to report while on SSI?
Changes in income, resources, where you live, who you live with and your health can affect SSI. Report them promptly.
Because SSI is needs-based, changes in your life can change your benefits. Reporting promptly helps you avoid overpayments that you may later have to pay back.
Common changes to report
- Starting or stopping a job, or a change in pay
- Money from other sources, including other benefits or gifts
- Changes in savings or property
- Moving, or someone moving in or out
- Entering a hospital, nursing facility or other institution
- Leaving the country for an extended time
- Changes in marital status
- Improvements in a medical condition
How to stay on top of it
- Keep a simple log with the date of each change.
- Keep pay stubs and letters in one folder.
- Report as soon as you can rather than waiting.
- Ask for and keep proof that you reported.
Reviews
Expect periodic reviews of your finances and, for disability-based SSI, your medical condition. Good records make these much easier.
